A MEE6 alternative: levels and XP with no subscription

A level system is not a gimmick: it is what gives members a reason to come back. This guide explains what one really needs, what moving to another bot costs, and how to migrate without putting the whole community back to level 1.

Why servers look for an alternative

MEE6 popularised levels on Discord and remains perfectly functional. Servers leave it for three recurring reasons.

The cost of features that have become expected. In its public offering, part of the level, customisation and automation settings sits behind the subscription. For a community server with no revenue, a recurring monthly payment for a coloured rank card is hard to justify.

Stacking bots. Levels with one, moderation with a second, tickets with a third, security with a fourth: four configuration panels, four possible outages, the same role list to keep up to date four times.

The absence of a security layer. A level bot protects nothing. On the day of the raid or the scam campaign, it counts the attackers' XP.

What an XP system really needs

Beyond the “writing makes you go up” principle, here is what separates a usable system from a decorative counter:

OriusBot provides all of it with no subscription: text and voice XP, roles per level, multipliers, exclusions, /classement inside Discord, a public web leaderboard, customisable rank cards, monthly seasons with a podium and a reward role.

Voice XP, the deciding point

It is the feature most often missing, and the one that matters most to a good share of servers. In a gaming community, most of the social life happens in voice: a system that only counts written messages rewards the members who write most, not the ones who are most present.

Voice XP grants experience per slice of time spent in a voice channel. Three safeguards keep it honest:

Preventing cheating

A rigged leaderboard loses all interest in one evening. Four measures are enough:

  1. A delay between two gains (typically 60 seconds): writing ten messages in a row pays once.
  2. Excluding channels for commands, tests and bots.
  3. A cap per period, so a ten-hour session does not open an unbridgeable gap.
  4. A minimum length for a message to count: a chain of “.” earns nothing.

Migrating without starting from zero

This is the real brake on changing bots, and it lifts easily once you know the trap.

Each bot uses its own progression curve: the amount of XP needed to cross a level is not the same from one bot to another. Carrying over a member's raw XP therefore gives a different level — sometimes very different. A member on 142,900 XP may be level 41 with one and level 37 with the other. They will not understand, and they will be right.

A good migration is therefore done on the level, not the XP. OriusBot allows both: setting an absolute XP value, or aiming straight at a target level and letting the bot work out the corresponding XP on its own curve. The procedure:

  1. Export the leaderboard from the old bot before removing it — this is the step you cannot make up for afterwards.
  2. Import by level rather than by raw XP, so everyone finds the number they know.
  3. Recreate the tier roles and check they are granted again.
  4. Keep both bots for a week, the old one with gains switched off, long enough to check.
  5. Announce the switch in advance: a leaderboard that changes without warning reads as a reset.

Two things to say honestly: MEE6 is older and better known, with a considerable community and documentation. And this table is written by the OriusBot team — it is factual, but read it knowing that. The security bot comparison takes the same approach on the protection side.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to MEE6?

Yes. Several bots offer XP, levels, leaderboards and tier roles with no subscription. OriusBot adds voice XP, seasons, a public leaderboard page and a security layer.

Can levels be carried over when changing bots?

Yes, if the new bot lets you set an absolute value. Watch out for the different curves: it is better to import the level than the raw XP.

What is voice XP?

Experience earned by staying in a voice channel, per slice of active minutes. Essential for communities that live in voice.

How do you prevent cheating?

A minimum delay between two gains, excluding spam and command channels, excluding members who are alone or self-muted, a cap per period.

Are level roles automatic?

Yes: a role tied to a tier is granted on crossing it.
