A level system that rewards presence, not spam

A message counter measures nothing. This guide shows how to tune XP so it reflects real participation: voice counted alongside text, tiers spaced out, and the safeguards that stop anyone inflating their score in thirty seconds.

What XP actually measures

By default, most bots grant experience per message sent. The result is predictable: people work it out, and the general channel fills up with “+1”, “lol” and messages cut into three. The leaderboard ends up rewarding exactly what you wanted to avoid.

Two corrections are enough to change the counter's nature. The first is a delay between two gains: sixty seconds, during which extra messages earn nothing. Writing ten messages in a row then earns as much as writing one. The second is counting time spent in voice, which is not as easily faked as a run of messages.

Text and voice, two distinct counters

Text XP is set with an amount per message and a delay. Voice XP is set per slice of minutes present. Both feed the same total, but it is worth knowing which dominates on your server: a gaming community lives in voice, a help server lives in text, and the same setting does not suit both.

The voice counter does not run under any conditions. An empty channel, a permanently muted microphone or a member alone in a corner do not produce participation: those cases are excluded, otherwise leaving a tab open overnight would be enough to top the leaderboard.

Reasonable starting settings

  • Text: 15 to 25 XP per message, a 60 second delay.
  • Voice: 5 to 10 XP per minute, in a channel with at least two active people.
  • Excluded channels: commands, memes, any channel where people post without writing.
  • Excluded roles: bots, and test accounts if you have any.

Tier roles

This is the visible part of the system, and the part that decides whether it serves any purpose. A role earned at level 5 after three days is worth nothing; a role earned at level 40 after six months motivates nobody, because nobody sees it coming.

Spacing that works: a first tier reachable within a week, a second within a month, then tiers further and further out. The early ones give a reason to stay, the late ones give something to aim at.

A tier can also grant a concrete right rather than a colour: access to a channel, the right to create a temporary voice channel, the ability to post a suggestion. A role that opens a door is earned; a decorative role is collected.

Announcing a level-up without polluting

The level message is a classic trap: on an active server it lands every two minutes in the main channel and ends up muted by everybody. Three forms are possible, to be chosen by the size of the community.

In every case, a separate channel for level-ups settles the problem for good. Those who care follow it; the others never see it.

Cheating, and what stops it

Three methods come up every time. Short-message spam, settled by the delay. Ghost voice, settled by the presence conditions. And lightly watched channels — a test channel, a forgotten category — which simply have to be excluded from the calculation.

One last case deserves attention: the member who writes a lot but talks to nobody. No setting detects them, because it is not cheating. It is a reminder that XP remains a crude measure, useful for animating a community, bad for deciding a recruitment.

Carrying over levels from another bot

Changing bots without putting everyone back to level 1 is possible, but takes one precaution. Progression curves differ from one bot to another: the same amount of XP can give level 41 with one and level 37 with the other. Importing raw points therefore changes the levels shown, and members notice immediately.

The right method is to import the level, not the point total: the bot then recomputes the XP matching its own curve, and nobody loses rank.

Frequently asked questions

Should voice XP be switched on?

On a server where people talk, yes: without it, the most present members rank lowest, which discredits the leaderboard. On a text-only server, it serves no purpose.

How do you stop the leaderboard from freezing?

With a monthly leaderboard alongside the overall one. The total rewards seniority, the monthly one gives somebody who arrived last week a chance.

Can XP be taken away from somebody?

Yes, by giving a negative amount, or by setting a level directly. Useful after proven cheating, or to fix an import.

Are tier roles removed if someone drops back down?

No: XP does not decrease on its own, so the question only arises after a manual removal. In that case, the role of the lost tier is taken back.

Can the leaderboard be seen outside Discord?

Yes, every server gets a public page — handy for sharing it outside Discord, or for keeping it open during an event.
